The Roles of Psychiatric Nurses for Integrated Care of Patients with Psychiatric Illness : Systematic Review

Abstract
Purpose: This study is a systematic review of literature for the integrated care of psychiatric and physical health for patients with the psychiatric illness.

Method: A systematic review of articles was conducted using a reference period between 2006 and 2016, based on the following databases: PsycINFO, PubMED, Web of Science. The primary search terms were `mental health care`, `psychiatric and physical illness`. Out of 68 articles, 10 articles were selected for this review. The policy reports have been selected from Australia, UK and EU.

Result: Psychiatric nurses recognized positively the integrated care of psychiatric and physical health, but they thought they have no legal authority nor be trained to intervene physical health care. The quality of physical health care for the patients with psychiatric illness has improved upon integrated care of mental and physical health through developing assessment tools for physical health. As the physical problems of patients with the psychiatric illness arose from UK and Australia, they announced the policy to implement integrated care for patients with the psychiatric illness. They provided guideline for physical health care of psychiatric illness.

Conclusion: As the morbidity rate of the mental ill patients increases, the mental health nurse needs the integrated care of psychiatric and physical health.
